It seems once you have done this the first time all future files when you go to the STREAM folder, are now associated with your choice of software by default, so you only need to do it the once initially, so be careful what viewer you first associate to. Open that folder and you can run each file Now called 0000#.MTS, direct, no problems from there, or import them into your video editing software, I use Roxio Creator 2010 Once this is done you can build a new folder to store your clips in and either copy or cut the files to it. I used VLC, but then went back and changed to Win Media Player. Meaning nobody told them what software is responsible for playing them, so right click on one and select option "OPEN WITH" check the list of players or select more options for other players. NOW the only reason they are un runnable, or un moveable is that the have not been associated. The videos are in the PRIVATE folder (Don't ask!) Double click - see folder AVCHD Double click see folder BDMV ,Double click See folder STREAM open that and there they are! Ahaaa! but they are pasty white files beginning with M. Open the files on the SD card There are three folders. Firstly you have to FIND the video files as they are not displayed on the card with the JPG's. I am no expert, but I have got where I want to be with this. I must confess I did buy a SDXC card rather than use the standard SD, so have not tried anything with a standard SD, but they are probably OK too. All I've ever known that software to do is freeze and make a control, alt, delete necessary, particularly if you spent hours editing video.
